Andrea Vasella
Professor of Organic Chemistry

Andrea Vasella (b. 1943) studied chemistry and biology at the University of Freiburg i. Ue. from where he received a Lic. rer. nat. in 1966. After a training period with Professor J. Kiss at Hoffmann La Roche, Basel, he earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the ETH in 1971, working with Professor D. Arigoni on the structure elucidation of Sordarin, a novel antifungal agent. After postdoctoral positions with Professor J. E. Baldwin (Kings College, London and MIT) and Professor R. B. Woodward (Harvard University) he returned to the ETH in 1974. In 1977, he moved as Assistant Professor to the University of Freiburg i.Ue. and hence, in 1981, as Associate Professor to the University of Zürich. He was promoted to full Professor and chaired the Institute of Organic Chemistry in 1987–1989. Since 1993, he has been Professor for Organic Chemistry at the ETH, chairing the Laboratory for Organic Chemistry in 1996–1997. He is the recipient of the Kern Medal, the Werner Medal and the Roy L. Whistler Award.
